Who's on 11th

4 May 2010

Special effects have come a long way.

I remember watching an ancient episode of Doctor Who once where the Doctor, aka John Pertwee, aka Worzel Gummidge, was under attack from a deadly killer mould.

It was built up as the most terrifying thing ever.  I was on the edge of my seat, would he survive the hideousness, would the mould grow on him like blue sprouts on cheddar, would he puff spores all over Aunt Sally?

And then they cut to the "deadly" mould.

It was a huge mound of shimmering soap suds.  Basically, just like Engineering students at Orientation week, they threw some Sunlight into a fountain and filmed the results.

It was hilarious and I think older doctors must be commended for their acting abilities screaming over excitable household cleansers just as much as the modern ones staunchly facing up to their green screens.

The 11th Doctor Who is about to reincarnate onto our TV screens like a Buddhist on acid and according to Grant Smithies at the Sunday Star Times, Matthew Smith is the best Doctor ever.

Wowzers that’s high praise indeed. Personally I think David Tennant is a very sexy man. Yes he’s a bit geeky, a bit skinny and a bit Scottish but I would have jumped into his Tardis anytime and he could have Sonic Screwdriven me all the way home.

Also hard to beat is Tom Baker’s very impressive scarf AND he ended up as the narrator on Little Britain and that’s totally cool. In fact In a 2005 survey of British adults, Baker's voice was found to be the fourth most recognisable after the Queen, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair!!

That’s some shoes to fill for the new, slightly weird looking Doctor, but the former Head Boy of Northampton School for Boys seems to be off to a fabulous start and his side-kick is ginger too so that’s totally cool.

I just hope the Daleks don’t take a fancy to her, no one wants to hear them screeching "ejaculate….ejaculate…ejaculate…" with all those new special effects after all.

Enjoy!
